When to consult a specialist

A coloproctologist assesses symptoms involving the rectum and anal canal, including pain, itching, bleeding and changes in bowel habits. A general surgeon provides consultations for skin, subcutaneous tissue and other surgical conditions. A single symptom cannot establish a diagnosis: care depends on examination and investigation findings.

What happens at the consultation

The doctor reviews symptom duration, previous treatment, other medical conditions and current medicines. Examinations are explained and performed with the patient’s consent. Further investigations or consultations may be recommended when appropriate. Bring previous medical reports and a medication list; do not stop medicines or undertake special preparation without medical instructions.

Treatment planning and recovery

The treatment plan is discussed individually. The doctor explains available options, limitations, risks and follow-up needs. If surgery is proposed, its extent, anaesthesia, setting and postoperative care are clarified beforehand. Recovery depends on the condition, procedure and patient’s health; identical outcomes or recovery times cannot be guaranteed.

When urgent care is needed

If you have heavy or ongoing bleeding, fainting, marked weakness, severe worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting or inability to pass stool and gas with abdominal swelling, do not wait for a routine appointment — seek urgent medical care.
