Paraproctitis involves infection of tissues around the anal canal and rectum and may lead to abscess formation. Once a significant abscess has formed, antibiotics alone are often insufficient and adequate drainage is required. At Ahvar Clinic, treatment is selected according to the location and extent of inflammation.

What it addresses / benefits

  • drainage of purulent material
  • reduction of pressure and pain
  • treatment of the infectious focus
  • prevention of spread of infection
  • follow-up for possible fistula formation.

Preparation

Severe pain, swelling, fever, or suspected abscess requires prompt evaluation by a surgeon or proctologist.

How the procedure is performed

The abscess is surgically opened and drained. The exact extent of treatment depends on the location and depth of the infection.

Result / recovery

Wound care and follow-up are required after drainage. An anal fistula may later develop in some patients.
