Anal Fistula Treatment

An anal fistula is an abnormal tract between the anal canal and the skin. Treatment depends on the fistula course and its relationship to the sphincter muscles.

Anal fistulas commonly develop after an anorectal abscess or episode of perianal infection. The key treatment objective is to eliminate the fistula while avoiding unnecessary injury to the muscles responsible for continence. At Ahvar Clinic, the surgical technique is selected after the fistula anatomy has been defined.

What it addresses / benefits

  • elimination of the fistula tract
  • treatment of recurrent discharge and inflammation
  • prevention of recurrent abscesses
  • preservation of sphincter function
  • individualized surgical technique.

Preparation

Evaluation by a colorectal specialist is required. Additional imaging may be needed for complex or recurrent fistulas.

How the procedure is performed

Simple fistulas may be treated by laying open the tract. More complex fistulas may require sphincter-preserving techniques.

Result / recovery

Healing depends on fistula type and surgical extent. Complex cases may require staged treatment.
