Silicone Oil Injection and Removal

Silicone oil may be used during selected vitreoretinal surgeries as an internal tamponade to support the retina and may later be removed when appropriate.

Silicone oil is used in vitreoretinal surgery as one form of internal ocular tamponade. It can remain in the eye longer than medical gas, but its presence requires monitoring and in some cases a later surgical procedure for removal. At Ahvar Clinic, the decision regarding silicone oil use and timing of removal is made by the vitreoretinal surgeon.

What it addresses / benefits

  • retinal support after selected operations
  • use in complex vitreoretinal conditions
  • possibility of longer-term internal tamponade
  • subsequent oil removal when indicated
  • individualized surgical strategy.

Preparation

Specialized retinal assessment and evaluation of the previously operated eye are required.

How the procedure is performed

Silicone oil is introduced into the eye as part of a vitreoretinal procedure. When it is no longer required, a separate operation is performed to remove it.

Result / recovery

The monitoring period depends on the original retinal condition. Regular postoperative follow-up is required after both injection and removal.
