Infant Hip Ultrasound

Infant hip ultrasound evaluates hip development and helps identify signs of developmental dysplasia or other abnormalities.

Hip ultrasound is used in infants to assess development of the hip joint structures. It is particularly useful at an early age because a significant portion of the infant hip is still cartilaginous. At Ahvar Clinic, the examination may be used for initial assessment and follow-up.

What it addresses / benefits

  • assessment of hip development
  • detection of developmental dysplasia
  • no ionizing radiation
  • suitability for early examination
  • follow-up during treatment.

Preparation

Special preparation is usually not required. It is helpful if the infant remains calm during the examination.

How the procedure is performed

The infant is positioned appropriately while each hip joint is examined with an ultrasound probe.

Result / recovery

Parents receive an ultrasound report. Pediatric orthopedic consultation may be recommended if abnormalities are identified.
