Neurosonography is used in newborns and infants while the fontanelles remain open enough to provide ultrasound access to the brain. It may be used to assess the ventricles, selected intracranial structures, and changes requiring follow-up. At Ahvar Clinic, the need for repeat examination is determined by the clinical situation.
What it addresses / benefits
- assessment of brain structures
- evaluation of the ventricular system
- detection of selected congenital or acquired abnormalities
- follow-up over time
- no ionizing radiation.
Preparation
Special preparation is usually not required. It is helpful if the infant is calm during the examination.
How the procedure is performed
The ultrasound probe is placed over the anterior fontanelle and other available acoustic windows. The doctor systematically evaluates intracranial structures.
Result / recovery
A neurosonography report is provided. If abnormalities are identified, pediatric, neurological, or additional imaging evaluation may be recommended.
