Breast ultrasound is an important imaging method for evaluation of breast tissue. It may be used to assess lumps, cysts, and other findings and may complement mammography. Ultrasound does not always replace mammography or other imaging, so further management depends on age and the clinical context.
What it addresses / benefits
- assessment of breast tissue
- evaluation of palpable lumps
- differentiation of selected cystic and solid lesions
- clarification of selected mammography findings
- follow-up of previously identified changes.
Preparation
Special preparation is usually not required. Previous ultrasound, mammography, or other breast imaging reports should be brought if available.
How the procedure is performed
The doctor systematically examines both breasts and, when indicated, the axillary regions using an ultrasound probe.
Result / recovery
A report is provided describing identified findings and recommendations for further assessment when needed.
