Cataract and glaucoma frequently occur in the same patient. In selected clinical situations, the ophthalmic surgeon may recommend a combined procedure. Trabeculectomy creates a new drainage pathway for aqueous humor and is a traditional surgical method for reducing intraocular pressure. At Ahvar Clinic, indications for combined surgery are determined after complete evaluation of both glaucoma and cataract.
What it addresses / benefits
- surgical treatment of cataract
- surgical reduction of intraocular pressure
- treatment of two eye conditions in one procedure
- implantation of an intraocular lens
- individualized glaucoma surgery planning.
Preparation
A comprehensive assessment of both cataract and glaucoma is performed, including intraocular pressure, optic nerve evaluation, and other relevant eye structures.
How the procedure is performed
The cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an IOL. During the same operation, the surgeon creates a filtration pathway for aqueous humor through trabeculectomy.
Result / recovery
Close monitoring of intraocular pressure and the filtration area is especially important after surgery. Follow-up may be more intensive than after standard cataract surgery.

A cataract is clouding of the eye’s natural lens. When vision is significantly affected, the main treatment is surgical replacement of the cloudy lens with an artificial IOL.
