Corneal Cross-Linking

Corneal cross-linking is used to strengthen the cornea and stabilize it in progressive keratoconus and selected other conditions.

Corneal cross-linking changes the biomechanical properties of the cornea through a photochemical interaction between riboflavin and ultraviolet light. The main indication is documented progression of keratoconus. Treatment decisions are based on serial assessment of corneal shape and thickness. At Ahvar Clinic, the need for cross-linking is determined after specialized corneal diagnostics.

What it addresses / benefits

  • stabilization of progressive keratoconus
  • increased biomechanical stability of the cornea
  • treatment directed at corneal tissue
  • possibility of slowing further shape change
  • individualized assessment of indications.

Preparation

Corneal topography or tomography and corneal thickness measurement are performed before treatment. Progression of the condition is assessed.

How the procedure is performed

The cornea is treated with riboflavin and then exposed to ultraviolet light according to the selected protocol. The exact technique depends on corneal characteristics.

Result / recovery

Recovery of the corneal surface and follow-up examinations are required after treatment. The primary goal is stabilization of the disease rather than guaranteed elimination of refractive error.
