An intrauterine device is a reversible contraceptive and may be removed by a gynecologist when needed. Most standard removals are straightforward, but additional evaluation may be required if the device has shifted or the strings cannot be accessed. At Ahvar Clinic, the removal method is selected after assessment.
What it addresses / benefits
- completion of IUD use
- preparation for pregnancy
- change of contraceptive method
- removal for medical indications
- possibility of inserting a new device afterward.
Preparation
The doctor reviews the type and duration of IUD use and any symptoms. Additional imaging may be required if the strings are not visible.
How the procedure is performed
The IUD is usually removed gently through the cervical canal by pulling on the device strings. A different approach may be required if the device is displaced or the strings are inaccessible.
Result / recovery
Special recovery is usually not needed after uncomplicated removal. Mild cramping or spotting may occur.
