The nasal septum separates the right and left sides of the nasal cavity. Significant deviation may narrow the nasal passage and contribute to impaired breathing. Septoplasty is intended to correct the anatomical deformity of the septum. The presence of septal deviation alone does not always require surgery; symptoms and ENT examination findings are important in determining indications. At Ahvar Clinic, the indications and extent of septoplasty are determined individually after specialist evaluation.
What it addresses / benefits
- correction of nasal septum deformity
- improvement of nasal airway patency
- reduction of mechanical nasal obstruction
- may be combined with other ENT procedures when indicated.
Preparation
Before surgery, an ENT consultation and examination of the nasal cavity are performed. Additional investigations may be recommended when necessary. Preoperative preparation is individualized according to the patient’s condition.
How the procedure is performed
The surgeon usually accesses the septum through the nasal cavity. Deformed cartilage and/or bony components are corrected so that the septum can be placed in a more functional position. The nasal cavity is then assessed after correction.
Result / recovery
Nasal breathing may remain temporarily limited during the early postoperative period because of swelling. Improvement is assessed gradually as healing progresses. Recovery varies between patients.
