Cystectomy

Ovarian cystectomy removes a cystic ovarian lesion while preserving as much healthy ovarian tissue as reasonably possible.

Cystectomy means removal of a cyst from the ovary, in contrast with oophorectomy, in which the ovary itself is removed. For lesions that appear benign, minimally invasive surgery is often preferred when appropriate. At Ahvar Clinic, surgical extent is selected after diagnostic assessment and consideration of reproductive plans.

What it addresses / benefits

  • removal of an ovarian cyst
  • preservation of ovarian tissue when possible
  • collection of tissue for histology
  • treatment of symptomatic or large lesions
  • minimally invasive access in suitable cases.

Preparation

Ultrasound and appropriate preoperative assessment are performed before surgery. The likelihood of benign or malignant disease is evaluated.

How the procedure is performed

The cyst is separated from ovarian tissue and removed. A minimally invasive laparoscopic approach is often used when the lesion appears benign and is suitable for laparoscopy.

Result / recovery

Recovery depends on the surgical approach and extent of surgery. Removed tissue is generally sent for histological examination.
