Phlebectomy of the GSV (Bilateral)

Phlebectomy is surgical removal of an abnormal saphenous vein and may be used in selected cases when an open surgical approach is chosen.

Modern phlebology widely uses endovenous methods, but open surgery remains relevant in selected clinical situations. The choice between phlebectomy, EVLA, radiofrequency ablation, and other techniques depends on venous anatomy, available technology, and individual factors. GSV, SSV, and treated side should be stored as procedural variants rather than separate medical entities.

What it addresses / benefits

  • removal of an incompetent venous trunk
  • treatment of advanced varicose disease
  • possible removal of either GSV or SSV
  • open surgical treatment option
  • possibility of combined tributary removal.

Preparation

Duplex ultrasound and standard preoperative assessment are performed before surgery.

How the procedure is performed

The pathological venous trunk is surgically exposed and removed completely or partially according to the selected technique.

Result / recovery

Bruising, tenderness, and temporary sensory changes may occur after surgery.
