Madelung disease, also known as multiple symmetric lipomatosis, is a rare disorder characterized by diffuse symmetrical accumulation of fatty tissue. Surgical excision or liposuction is used mainly for significant deformity or functional problems, but recurrence remains possible. The price-list term “Madelung removal” is more accurately described as treatment of Madelung disease.
What it addresses / benefits
- reduction of bulky fatty deposits
- decompression of surrounding structures when necessary
- improvement of neck and upper-body contour
- surgical excision or liposuction in selected cases
- possibility of staged treatment.
Preparation
The extent of lipomatosis and its relationship to vessels, nerves, and airway structures are assessed. CT or MRI may be required.
How the procedure is performed
Fatty masses are treated using surgical excision, liposuction, or a combination of techniques according to their location and extent.
Result / recovery
The condition can recur even after surgery, so continued follow-up is required.
