Autologous Nerve Grafting (Upper Limb)

Autologous nerve grafting is used when a peripheral nerve defect cannot be safely repaired by direct suturing without excessive tension.

When a significant segment of a peripheral nerve is missing, direct repair may create excessive tension. In such cases, autologous nerve grafts can be used to restore nerve continuity. Upper-limb and lower-limb entries are anatomical variants of the same reconstructive principle.

What it addresses / benefits

  • reconstruction of an injured peripheral nerve
  • restoration of nerve continuity
  • use of the patient’s own nerve graft
  • treatment of upper or lower limb nerve defects
  • creation of conditions for nerve regeneration.

Preparation

Specialized assessment of the injury, nerve function, and time since trauma is required. Electrophysiological testing and imaging may also be needed.

How the procedure is performed

Damaged nerve ends are prepared, and the gap is bridged using segments of the patient’s own donor nerve. The technique depends on the location and length of the defect.

Result / recovery

Nerve recovery is slow and depends on injury level, chronicity, and the distance to target muscles and sensory areas. Complete functional recovery cannot be guaranteed.
