Most children with congenital muscular torticollis are initially treated conservatively, especially when treatment begins early. Surgery is reserved for persistent contracture when adequate improvement has not been achieved. At Ahvar Clinic, indications are determined individually after specialized assessment.
What it addresses / benefits
- correction of persistent muscle contracture
- improvement of neck range of motion
- correction of pathological head tilt
- reduction of secondary deformity
- possibility of subsequent rehabilitation.
Preparation
The muscular origin of torticollis must be confirmed and neurological, bony, and other causes excluded.
How the procedure is performed
Depending on severity, the surgeon releases or lengthens the affected sternocleidomastoid muscle.
Result / recovery
Rehabilitation and restoration of neck motion are important after surgery. Complete correction of long-standing asymmetry may not always be possible.
