Radial Axial Flap Reconstruction

Axial flap reconstruction uses a segment of tissue with preserved vascular supply to cover complex defects.

Book an appointment →

Axial flap reconstruction is used for defects that cannot be reliably closed with simple suturing or smaller local flaps. The exact technique depends on the defect anatomy and vascular pedicle. For the final Ahvar database, the exact radial flap technique used by the surgical team should ideally be confirmed.

What it addresses / benefits

  • coverage of complex defects
  • transfer of well-vascularized tissue
  • reconstruction of soft tissues
  • coverage of exposed deeper structures
  • individualized flap planning.

Preparation

The defect, vascular anatomy of the donor region, and alternative reconstructive options are assessed.

How the procedure is performed

The flap is raised together with its vascular pedicle and transferred to the defect while maintaining its blood supply.

Result / recovery

Flap viability and the donor site are monitored. Scars and functional changes may occur in both areas.
