SMAS stands for the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, a supporting layer located beneath the facial skin. A surgical SMAS face lift works with this deeper layer rather than relying only on skin tightening. The procedure may be considered in patients with significant tissue descent and changes in the lower-face contour. The exact technique is selected according to anatomy and the degree of age-related change. At Ahvar Clinic, the need for and extent of surgical SMAS lifting are determined individually after an in-person consultation with a plastic surgeon.
What it addresses / benefits
- correction of facial soft-tissue descent
- improvement of mid- and lower-face contours
- treatment of deeper supporting structures
- individualized restoration of a more defined jawline.
Preparation
Before surgery, the plastic surgeon evaluates the degree of tissue descent, skin condition, and facial and neck anatomy. Medical history and current medications are reviewed. Preoperative testing is selected individually.
How the procedure is performed
The surgeon accesses the tissues through planned incisions and performs correction of the SMAS layer. Deeper tissues are repositioned and secured, after which excess skin is adjusted when necessary. The exact technique is selected by the surgeon.
Result / recovery
Swelling, tenderness, and temporary changes in appearance may occur after the procedure. Final contours emerge gradually as tissues recover. Rehabilitation varies between patients.
